“It was Sunday afternoon, I had to be out to gather some foley for a project, it was wet and miserable, but while I was out I ended up with a recording of a tram ride from inside. It was very quiet – Melbourne’s still not quite back on board with public transport after so many COVID restrictions (you can hear one of the few passengers remembering that masks are still required for the trip), and the weather deterred a lot of tourists to St Kilda, so it was a surprisingly quiet. Trams have a sound that’s not quite like any other form of transport, with the sounds of high-voltage motors something I’ve never heard elsewhere.”
