Late afternoon, field in East Kent, UK on 12th July 2020 – by Laura Barton
“I had driven past this field, close to my home in Kent, many times. Last year it was filled with rapeseed. This year it was wheat. In late April I began to walk across the field each day, following the crop’s progression from tight, slim, silver-green to soft burnished gold. On hot afternoons I would sit in it with a beer and a book, listen to its skylarks and hedge-sparrows and grasshoppers, to the wind brushing through stalks and sounds from distant houses. On Friday 31st July, the hottest day of the year, the field was harvested. This recording is from a Sunday afternoon on the 12th, sitting in the heart of the field.”
