Fawn, Scotland, UK in 2019 – by Mark Stephen

“I’m reasonably knowledgeable about birds but last year I heard something I couldn’t recognise. It was a strange high-pitched squeak. It turned out to be a roe deer kid ( fawn ) in the field at the bottom of our drive. The field is surrounded by sheep-proof fencing and somehow the kid had got in there and now couldn’t get out. It was calling for it’s mother. We tried chasing it out but couldn’t. The mother visited it every morning and evening. It was in there until the cattle were moved into another field. Once we could leave the gate open all the time it was able to leave. Sadly it only enjoyed about 3 days of freedom before it got knocked down and killed on the road. Whatever else it is round here – it’s not Walt Disney.”
