“Although part of the Tokyo Metropolitan area, at night the meandering residential streets of Hachiōji city are hushed. Without fail, late summer in Japan brings the sound of crickets stridulating, which I recorded from time-to-time outside my front door with the aroma of mosquito coil to keep me from being bitten. Occasional car motors in the distance are the sole reminder of Hachiōji’s half a million residents.”
