“Meiji Jingu is a well-known Shinto shrine located in the heart of Tokyo, near Harajuku. This recording was made early enough in the morning for the shrine’s approach to be placid ahead of the afternoon tourist surge. Amidst a chorus of cicadas punctuated by a crow cawing – two staples of Tokyo’s summer soundscape – an attendant can be heard dutifully raking fine gravel into spirals.”
