Sinharaja tropical rainforest, South West of Sri Lanka, at daybreak – by Alannah Chance

“When we arrived at the old tea plantation in the rainforest it was pitch black and still but alive with the sound of insects.  I set my alarm for 5am the next morning and stalked out with my recorder to the platform overlooking the canopy.  As I lay out on the day bed I heard the forest come alive with birds, monkeys and insects starting their day.  I started to pick out the individual characters in the orchestra and how they fall in and out of synch which each other. There’s operatic warblers and fidgety tweeters but also pedestrian crossings and what sounds like techno or disco samples.
It’s recorded with binaural microphones so wear headphones for full effect.”
